KAFUE GORGE
Kafue Gorge is fondly referred to as the little Switzerland of Zambia because of it’s natural setting. Dozens of rising and falling hills, ravines and galleys are a major panoramic setting.
The gorge also known among the locals as Namalundu or Chikonkomene – the place of many twisted hills – is graced by the manmade lake created in the late 1960’s when the Kafue Gorge Hydro-power Station was built.
The lake added more beauty and potential for tourism and holidaying as it increased it’s panorama.
Within this panoramic setting, just by the waterfront, stands Otter Bay Lodge. It is located on an isle like site with remarkable scenic beauty and undisturbed natural vegetation of the African woodland.
THE LODGE
The lodge has 7 rooms (6 of them self-contained) with flush toilets, hot and cold showers. It also has a bar, Jacuzzi on a wooden deck and a swimming pool by the waters edge.
The beds are of Victorian design with mosquito nets hanging over each one.
Ironically, there may be just one place or none at all with such structures in Zambia. And the rooms are very romantic.
The lodge has plenty to see. From the birds, hippos, otters, crocodiles, water monitors and lizards to the fish eagle (Passeriformes), guinea fowls (numida mitrata), squirrels, monkeys and baboons to the smallest animals and insects are found in this area. Across the lake on the North bank, other animals such as the aardvark (tubulidetanta), puku, eland, spotted deer and the porcupine are especially from January to March.
Otter Bay is ideal for small groups, particularly the incentive groups. It offers complete solitude and a touch of the wild. This is an area suitable for corporate getaways, team building programmes and focus groups in a country atmosphere, away from the hassles and noise of office and city life, to an environment where concentration and focus is renewed. There is room for adaptability to mix work sessions with recreation and leisure. A 9 hole golf course is being developed.
The lodge is also ideal for family holidays, honeymoon hideaways, weekend getaways, parties and lunches where meal times are turned into occasions – breakfasts in the bush, lunch and dinner in outdoors with food sizzling on open fires.
Although the lodge is currently self catering, kitchen staff, cooking utensils are provided. Full boarding and lodging can be provided but only by prior arrangement.
Unlike most camps and lodges which ‘go off season’ or close from November to about March mainly because of their location in the far flung National Parks and Game Management Areas which become inaccessible during the rainy season, Otter Bay is accessible and open all year round. We will make maximum use of this for you to rediscover the “Wet Green Season”. We, therefore, shall offer green season specials at reduced rates. Although it is hot during this season, the vegetation is lush and bird watching is excellent. This is also the time when the animals on our ranch across the lake are mostly seen.
DIRECTIONS
The lodge is only about 100 km from Lusaka’s Kafue roundabout. The last 6 km is on a dirt road that branches off the tarmac leading to Kafue Gorge Power Station, just before the gate to the ZESCO barrier.
The recommended mode of transport is any vanette, light truck or better 4x4 drive vehicles. Alternatively, the lodge can be accessed by boat from the Kafue Marina Club and this takes only about 20 minutes by speedboat.

*children under 12 years sharing with adults at half price and children under 5 years sharing with adults free.
*children occupying separate chalets will be charged at 75% of above rates.
