SATURDAY: 10.00hrs. the Litunga (King) leaves Lealui (summer palace) in the Nalikwanda (royal barge).
18.00hrs. the Litunga arrives at the Limulunga palace. The paddlers dance the Lishoma.
SUNDAY: Festivities at the Limulunga palace in the afternoon (e.g. pole climbing).
Trip: Lusaka – Mongu: 600 km good road.
Mongu has several filling stations and a big Shoprite.
Accommodation: All hotels etc. are fully booked.
Try to camp in the garden of some countrymen (some really appreciate this!)
Boat hire: The ceremony at Lealui is only accessible by boat.
A boat for +/- 30 people costs 2 million kwacha.
Call: Kingsley Simbotwe: 097 – 94 36 64 or 095 – 94 36 64 or 07 – 24 00 14 or
097 – 13 00 11 or 095 – 13 00 11
Tips and tricks: Leave Friday morning from Lusaka and have lunch (byo) at Mukambi Lodge campsite.
Try to book a speed boat (for 5-6 people).
Bring your own life jackets (or other floating device) even if you know how to swim!
If a boat capsizes, people who do not know how to swim will pull you down when they panic.
The leave from Lealui is much more private than the arrival at Limulunga (20,000 people!).
Leave at 08.00hrs. from Mongu harbour.
Bring a cooler box and enjoy the ceremony.
Women are not allowed to come close to the Nalikwanda!
When the Litunga in his barge (with the elephant on top) and the barge with his household goods (nothing on top) leaves, go with a mokoro (dug out canoe) from behind the church (2000 kwacha) to the channel where he meets his wife (with the bird on top of the barge).
She comes from the back of Lealui and they will meet and play 200 meters from the place they left, for 1 hour.
Then go back to Mongu Harbour and now you can go to Limulunga (by car).
Do not wait too long because when you arrive too late you will not be allowed to go in the ceremony area.
